The sonnets of William Shakespeare are read by British actor Sir John Gielgud. The sonnet form enjoyed great popularity in England in the late 16th century, and Shakespeare in writing this sequence was influenced by other writers of his day. However, they display an intensely personal feeling and were clearly shaped by the author’s own experience. In this recording, incidental music is provided by the Elizabethan Consort of Viols and the Taylor Consort of Recorders, conducted by Leslie Pearson.
